18 Oct 1840“When the military arrived the blacks were still escaping through the breach in the doorway. Corporal Jenning of the 28th regiment who was first, fired his piece right into the midst of the throng, but not according to his own statement, until he had attempted to drive the blacks back with his bayonet; this portion of his evidence, however is contradicted by that of the man Holland who states that the corporal fired right into the doorway as soon as he came up to the store.”
